Treacherous uppercut and its aftermath. The legend of a hotel in the city of Padang.
Electricity from the many open doors cut darkness with a knife. The smoke over the braziers lit up and it seemed that their masters were conjuring in rainbow clouds. Diving between motorbikes and parked cars, we finally saw some free tables around the kiosk. There was a large fish restaurant very near, but I just wanted to drink soda with a few drops of lemon juice. Having settled down more comfortably, we placed an order with a juicer and when he got down to business, my eyes focused on a large building on the other side of the street.
Each pillar shouted tomorrow about Indonesia Day, waving a light bulb. The haggler with grilled bananas smiled sweetly with his toothless mouth, creeping past with his wheelbarrow, looking like an aquarium. Every Indonesian was holding a mobile phone, and each Indonesian straightened the hijab. Rudy moved to Padang two years ago and last week received a diploma in geophysics. Agung developed tourism in central Sumatra, but his perseverance did not give moral remuneration - the salary came, and the tourists did not go. There are not many of them in Padang either. However, the appearance of the Chinese in Sumatra is only a matter of time.
The building opposite was called "The Axana Hotel". Large windows framed with clean plaster keep little secrets and know human stories. Usually, they are about travel. It happens that the newlyweds in love will be brought here and, having a swim in the pool, they will fly away to the bytovuha. In the neighborhood, in the new concrete square is KFC, and on the other hand - the school which has a curved roof. In contrast to the classic Indonesian chaos, everything is well-kept and not pokotsano around. I reported my surprise to the satellites. They looked at each other and Rudy began the story.
Padang is located in a zone of high seismic activity. The land here is regularly shaking, and one of the September days of 2009, Rudy came to visit relatives. Residents of Indonesia are always ready for surprises. They treat natural disasters with stoic calmness and perceive them as normal. Thousands of years among volcanoes, tsunamis and floods taught them not to lose heart, but to live. Seventy kilometers from Padng, eight hundred atomic bombs were shunned simultaneously - a powerful earthquake occurred, echoing which reached Singapore and Jakarta. At the beginning of the 20th century, the scourge of a similar force blew the city of San Francisco off the face of the earth.
On the torso of Padang one traitorous uppercut was inflicted. Within a few seconds, 75% of all buildings in the city collapsed, burying thousands of people under the rubble. Garuda and demons were not felled in the sky, but underground, at the junction of tectonic plates. Fortunately, Rudy was not in the room, but near the entrance to a large supermarket. He managed to run out into the middle of the street and sit on the asphalt among the frightened people. In his eyes, the roof collapsed on hundreds of shoppers left in the store. The combination of left-right and left-left strikes made people on the street howl from fear and helplessness. Twenty minutes later, from the second strongest uppercut, the half-million city spun, lost consciousness and fell into the ring.Padang and its surrounding settlements were completely destroyed. Rudy gestured toward the hotel. Three hundred people died under its rubble, but only half of them were found.
The clock was ticking. The city got up, shook himself and came to his senses. The Indonesians rebuilt it with their enthusiasm. When you arrive in Padang by plane, it seems that a piece of the moon broke off, fell on our planet and scattered silver on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Lanterns are burning and their magical light pulls moths towards them. The Axana Hotel has become more beautiful and stronger, and a pool appeared on the roof. In the afternoon, the voices of travelers and tourists are heard again, but at night in the corridors there are shouts. They diverge on the floors, scaring visitors and workers to death. One of the staff at night shift almost got a heart attack while inspecting the floors. It was not alone to do the work, as steps and rustles were constantly heard nearby - this ghost helped him. Guests complained on the Internet about noise that interferes with sleep, and all residents of Padang know that souls not found after the disaster live in the hotel.
Rudy is an educated, modern, secular person. As a student, he worked at The Axana Hotel and said that he quit because of the terribly tense atmosphere inside the building. These are steps ... steps ... steps ... just around the corner near the night elevator, and then a dull, barely perceptible cry: "Help !!!" and echo ... echo ... echo ... rolling down the hall like a bowling ball.
Three days after the earthquake from the ruins of the hotel came SMS with the text that his sender is alive. It was a young girl. She was saved.
P.S. The search continued until a steady smell of decomposition appeared over the ruins. People from many countries took part in the rescue work. Including from Germany, Russia, Japan, Italy and Switzerland.
1. Many have heard that a few weeks ago on the Indonesian island of Lombok there was a strong earthquake. In those days I was in Bali - very close. There, the echo of this natural phenomenon reached a strength of 6 points - it was very much felt.
2. The first time the tremors began late in the evening. I thought I was very tired and staggering. It turned out that the earth was slowly swaying with an amplitude of about a meter and a half. People poured out of the hotels and waited for the completion of the pitching outside - so that they would not fall asleep with the rubble of buildings.
3The second time I woke up from the fact that the wooden house where I lived squeaked heavily, and then nature blasted it five times with the power of a dinosaur. After two minutes - again, five or six times. Everything calmed down and I went to breakfast.
