Why do Iranian women wear face masks?
Iran is an amazing country with vibrant traditions, fascinating tourists and attracting the attention of scholars of ethnographers. One of the most interesting cultural phenomena of this country is the women's Iranian burka. Sometimes it may turn out that Iranian women wear a mustache, but in fact it is a traditional type of clothing. And for his appearance were their reasons.
Immediately it is worth making a reservation that the name "burka" is used in English-language sources. The Iranians themselves call this type of women's clothing ruband, nekab-e or cheshband. And if the Russians “burka” is associated with the length of men's clothing of a dark color, then in Iran it is quite another. The Iranian burka is the subject of women's wardrobe, which can be seen in the province of Hormozgan, located in southern Iran.
Burka has nothing to do with the hijab. If the latter is a religious dress code, obliging to cover not only the head, but also other parts of the body, then the burka is intended to emphasize women's identity. This element of clothing today is designed to make a woman more beautiful and provides a unique opportunity for representatives of the lower strata of society to remain incognito.
However, in fairness it should be said that the tradition of wearing the burka was influenced by the culture of individual villages and the climate. In some villages of Hormozgan, women wear a burka to protect themselves from the scorching sun, in others - from sand flying in the face, and thirdly - as a hijab.
Today, ethnographers believe that mustache-shaped masks appeared in Iran several centuries ago, so that enemy soldiers would take women for men.
They put a burka on a girl at the age of 9, and from the characteristic features of this unusual accessory you can learn a lot about its owner: age, marital status, place of residence.
In a burka, color matters also. Only girls wear dark brown or black, brides walk in orange-golden, and red ladies wear red. Burki sew only to order. It takes 2-3 days to make it, but such an unusual mask costs about $ 6. However, there are expensive models, embroidered with Swarovski crystals.
It remains to be noted that today the Iranian burka is rather a tribute to traditions, associated with decency, but not with religiousness.
